FOR POSTGRADUATE STUDENTS

Beit Trust

  • offers annually a small number of Scholarships for postgraduate studies or research to graduates.   The duration of the Scholarships is normally for up to three years at the discretion of Trustees.  Scholarships are taken up at a University in the United Kingdom, Ireland or South Africa, for study in a subject of the individual’s choice appropriate to the needs of the beneficial area.  In addition, a small number of one-year taught Masters degrees are offered at the University of Leeds, known as the Beit Chevening Leeds Scholarship and similar awards, known as the Beit Chevening Reading Scholarship, are also offered at the University of Reading.

University of Newcastle

  • will roll out the second stage of a major development initiative in eastern and southern Africa, launching a new scholarship scheme with the Government of Kenya for five PhD students.
  • The scholarship scheme is part of a $2.6 million University initiative to build capacity in countries in eastern and southern Africa.
  • The initiative involves waiving fees for up to 30 government-sponsored research higher degree students from Africa to study at the University of Newcastle in Australia over the next three years.
  • The five scholarships launched today in Kenya are the second stage of the initiative, and follow five scholarships announced in Botswana last year.

Sierra Leone Scholarships

Scholarships FOR PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

Batonga

  • 50 girls have been awarded secondary school scholarships to attend the new school above, beginning in September 2007. They will enroll in various grades, and the same Batonga scholarship will be paid annually until each girl graduates from grade 12. The scholarship includes tuition, uniforms, school supplies, mentoring and community awareness programs.
  • funds are being provided for a Vocational Training School in Freetown that currently has 48 girls enrolled, all of whom were rescued from brothels. These girls were forced into the sex trade by crushing poverty and a lack of opportunities for women. All under 20 years of age, each of the girls is close to completing a two-year vocational training program in one of four professions: tie dying, tailoring, soap making and photography.

Free The Children – Adopt a Village

  • Adopt a Village in Sierra Leone takes place in the Kono District, the region most affected by the brutal 11-year civil conflict over the country’s diamond mines. More than 10,000 children were forced to fight as soldiers in the diamond war.
  • Our development efforts focus on strengthening affected communities. Education initiatives rebuild schools destroyed in the conflict and provide quality education programming. Through our education programs, we are helping children affected by war rebuild their lives and their communities, so they can be major contributors to keeping a lasting peace.
  • Clean water and sanitation projects improve health and reduce the number of chores assigned to girls so they can go to these schools. Alternative income projects provide cows, goats and other sources of income so parents can send their kids to class. Healthcare initiatives address problems specific to this region of Africa, including HIV/AIDS.

Leonenet Street Children Project

  • Our work centers on foster-care,teenage-mother and child welfare and education, advocacy, and outreach. We also collaborate with government agencies and non-governmental organizations to provide one-time or short-term emergency aid to destitute children and families.

Scholarship Overview

  • The Norwegian government provides scholarships for students from developing countries and countries in Eastern Europe and Central Asia through the Quota Scheme.
  • Most of the programs offered are at Master’s or PhD level, but the Quota Scheme also offers certain Bachelor’s

What does the scholarship cover?

  • Each student receives the same amount of money as a Norwegian student would do in an equivalent educational program.
  • About 30 per cent of the amount is given as a grant and 70 per cent as a loan.

Denmark Ministry of Education Scholarship Scheme

  • Scholarships for students from outside the EU/EEA for studies at Academies of Professional Higher Education and University Colleges are administered by the individual institutions.
  • The scholarships can be given as full or partial tuition fee waivers and/or grants towards covering your living costs. However, as the scholarships are administered by the individual institution, you should enquire about the details at the institution you are interested in studying at.

Wells Mountain Foundation

  • WMF started in 20025 to help support students in literacy and education in africa and other countries in the developing world. They provide funding to families, men and women who find themselves in difficult situations caused by poverty.
  • WMF also has a scholarship program that has grown significantly over the years. In 2011 they support 46 individuals from around the globe. Check out there website for more information on their Scholarships and Scholars.
  • From my experience, the scholarship application process is usually not what most expect it to be – this scholarship is the exception, it is exactly what you would expect and therefore a great place to start. Check their website for the application period for 2013
