the issue of maths and maths litaracy i think it should be revisited again especialy when cooming to bcom degrees ther a lots of student who do well in statistics and econometrics and they have only mathematical litaracy background. maths lit its more of financial maths and this what i do day in and day out in stats and econometrics so i think this should be revised the enrolment policy.good universities produce good student not take a good student and take all the credit,wits tuks uj uct.review your enrolment policy regarding maths litaracy and bcom degrees
I agree with the above commented pupil, that good universities should produce good students and not accept students only wit mathematics but also those with mathematical literacy and train them in their desired career paths, i also think the enrolment policies against maths and maths literacy should be revised and learners with maths literacy backgrounds must be given an equal chance and opportunities in best career fields as others.

universities are doing a great job in trying to accept students with great potential towards their studies, but it is all up to the students to keep the standard of that particular institution high.
l reckon the University of the freestate should redesign their financial aid offering procedures,thus,it must also consider the international students for even need based or partiaal scholarships.Also there must be international students boards and repsentatives in all the compases rather than main campus only.

Hey, Sydney, university of cape town is a highly recognizd institution whn coming to Accounting sciences, but alternatively if u dnt qualify, u can apply at the university of the freestate, n with regard to the financial AID issue, NSFAS loan is available for South African residents.
Sydney i thnk u shuld try Unirversity of the Free State coz NSFAS loan is available if u qualify for it and it is also the best University in SA.

Guys do we rate the university based on what they provide to student or the results? personaly i would say the best school is the one with utmost ways of operating models. i was puzzled to rock up in TUT to do registration only to find that ways of doing things still look the same back in 2000 when i enrolled with them. while u a mastered student u have to queue a very long line with all first years and all that. And when i enrolled with UJ for Btech , all went well that i do rate them very well. unfortunate i can only rate the school i went pass or did sometimes went for help.
i would like to know which university, according to you guys, produces good quality lawyers. I plan on studying business law, and being more than just an average lawyer.

U know i’m so amazed that why is the University of Zululand not mentioned among other Universities, but it does exist and it has produced a number of graduates such as the late jugde president Herbert Msimango, the well wellknown politicians like Sbusiso Ndebele,Mthunzi Namba, Hlengiwe Mhlaba. It is also good in social work, education and law.It also have a woldwide recognized science centre in richard bay which was officially opened by dignitaries from all over the world.I think people are making a big mistake here and they must tell people the truth that UNIZULU is the best University in South Africa. This discussion reminds back when I was in boarding school -and the topic “where you are from?” came up. I always battled to justify why the not-so-cool Nongoma, a rural area, was good -especially without any well-know townships (I don’t know about now).
…but we missed the point a lot. The guys from fancy towns/suburbs didn’t get there by their own choice nor the poor ones from not-so-cool areas (the mean boys laughed the hack out of me).
Similarly, the varsities where we do our degrees -some of us get pushed by conditions to take the “second best”. I graduated with decent matric results and aimed for the good old Wits University and they accepted my application with financial assistance towards my tuition -but I could not afford accomodation.
So, I fell back to my fourth choice university, after UCT & Natal University then, which was characterised by heated strikes. Despite, the trying times -I managed to finish an engineering degree with several distinctions and had a job in matter of weeks. I carried on with post-graduate qualifications while working (including an MBA), and currently make a decent living -and opportunities continue to avail themselves.
The point I am trying to make is: which ever tertiary institution you find yourself wherether famous of infamous -differentiate your personal degree that you get (whether by distinctions, completion on time, complementary postgraduate studies, ect). Don’t fall into a trap of lowering your standards because of how your institution is perceived.
Its actually what they have also taught us in business school, to differentiate ones MBA for career progression, so I won’t claim the notion to be my creation -but I believe in it and has worked for me.
Similarly, I believe wherether you are from the squatter camps or fancy Sandton -how you differentiate yourself as individual determines if you are a wonderful girl or boy or not (where you are from has influence but counts not so much).

I think we have to understand that the issue of rankings is based to certain considerable factors. First we all know that in SA we three different kinds of universities (Comprehensive Universities , Traditional Universities and Universities of Technology ). The rankings can be done in each category e.g top three best UOT , top three best TU and top three best CT. You can’t compare UKZN with UJ or MUT with UCT or UP with Wits they all operate differently. In engineering UCT offer Bsc because is the traditional university. UJ offer BEng and BTech because is the Comprehensive university. MUT offer BTech or Ndip because is the university of technology. The latest rankings for best engineering faculty are

Guys UCT,NMMU,UWC,UKZN and STELLENBOSCH are the best in South africa and the worse is WSU whether u lyk it or not. People are just commenting about their universities being the best because competition is always healthy in an academic environment. Everyone who came to comment here, were not forced into coming here to be “discussing d better ways of how to put our lovely country in d GLOBAL COMPETITIVE ENVIRONMENT…” No, they probably just googled “top 10 SA universities” or found a link their friend posted on Facebook, came here, found their university and thought they would “represent” so to speak. There really is no use in boasting that your particular institution attracts foreign postgrad students, because at the end of the day, the skilled required are not benefiting the very same country you and I live in.
There is no use in implying that “black students are stupid, those that went to better schools pass more”. As a black student from a rural area, I am very confident in almost every student that manages to gain entry into any tertiary institution, because it simply means that they have the capability to better this country. (Provided the marks weren’t fixed from the beginning). At the end of the day it depends on an individual
As for those needing information on where to study, rather consult these institutions directly as the information you get is correct and sometimes fair. No use in fishing for such here!

when it comes to Law, like it or not, the UNIVERSITY OF LIMPOPO is the best. S A is saturated with competent and best lawyers who obtained their LLBs in UNIVERSITY OF LIMPOPO. Ofcos, it is not as fancy as varsities like wits, uct, nd up,,,, but it produces only the best lawyers. even Blade Nzimande knows that

@Tshepang, have you considered Rhodes University?.. Law Firms consider it, because you get to study any degree (Bcom,Becon,BA,BSoc Sci, BFA, BJOURN etc..) but majoring in Legal Theory and Another subbject.. and then after graduating in your first degree (3yrs) you get to do an LLB Degree for only two years, meaning you will get 2 degrees in a period of 5yrs! No Law Firm wouldn’t want to employ you then, and another thing, you get to change career paths without going back to school/study…!!…. eg: I’m doing my BEcon degree majoring in Economics and Legal Theory, after 3yrs I graduate and move on to LLB for two years, and in 5yrs I get my LLB. #Food for thought!!……. http://www.ru.ac.za check it out!!…… Rhodes University “Where Leaders Learn”….
