RANKING OF THE TOP 20 SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN SOUTH AFRICA BY PROVINCE
- Department of Basic Education reports on the performance of all the secondary schools in South Africa.
- Retracted a list of all the schools that achieved a 100% pass rate
- Selected the top 20 schools according to the total of students who wrote and passed the exams – it is easier to ensure a class of 20 students pass the exams than classes with 300 students

KHETHATSEBO GETS 100% BUT ONLY 1 LEANER WITH 1 DISTINCTION. WHATS THAT. SASAMALA HAS MORE THAN 90 CANDIDATES THATS WHY WE CANT GET IT BUT I PROMIC 100% THIS YEAR
Wanda says
It is inaccurate to say a school is the “Top School” in a province, only because it is the BIGGEST school in the province with the most matriculants. This is a ridiculous and misleading method of ranking a school. What about University exemption percentage of the school, average distinction percentage of all matriculants? Please do not give a ridiculous picture of schools, only to be informing us of actually the biggest schools and NOT THE TOP SCHOOLS!!!! Get your facts in order!!!
Sbusiso says

Phumulani Secondary School is the best school in Kathorus…
mitchell's plain scholar says
Why don’t you ever see schools from mitchell’s plain in the top 20…there are good schools like oval north high, mondale high, spine road high, portlands high, princeton high etc…only schools that are based goodwood or fish hoek are being seen
Pretoria scholar says
How can certain schools like montana and edgemead high be ranked above schools like Affies and pretoria boys high and Bloemhof??? None of these ranks were based on academic, culture or sport achievements
Jon says
Well, in the Western Cape the second-ranking school is Fish Hoek High, who have had an unbroken 100% pass rate for the past 15 or more years. And it’s a big school with over 200 in each matric class. Yet they’re there on the list, even if the claim is that all the 100% pass schools are not being counted? So how carefully have they vetted their info?
Tereen Kingwill says
Esther Strydom….if your spelling & usage of general grammar is anything to go by, Retief Hoer Skool has certainly failed in your education???? Archive or achieve???? etc, etc…
U_mad? says
hahaha @Tania
You are actually wondering why Abbots College isnt in top 10?
Do i need to answer this…
Rayno September says
Jy my bru, my school make it to namber 2 in the WC! AWE! Hosja. All those whiteys can ma voetsek!
captain obvious says
Dear commentators, all you had to do was read the opening paragraph. This is a list which ranks the schools with 100% pass rate who cranked out the most students. If you understand the metric, you will understand the list – its really not that difficult. This list does not purport to rank schools as “better” or “worse” – it merely states the procedure and prints the results. If you dont agree with the metric, fine, but all this “my school should be higher up the list” bullsh*t should have been left in SCHOOL – clearly you have not made it out of this phase of your life!
Tania says
Seriously flawed. Where is Abbotts College?
martin williams says
Really!! When you note the absence of schools like Grey Bloem; KES in jhb; Westville Boys in Durban; Wynberg Boys in Ct, you have to wonder what warped criteria was applied. Without publishing the applied criteria these ratings are worthless.
IAN LANGDON says
I love the fact that Bishops is down at NO 10….. hahahaha, this has really made my day!!
Silence of the toffs!!!
Charles Thomson says
I find it difficult to believe that Woodridge and St.Andrews don’t make the list in the Eastern Cape and that Pretoria Boys High School doesn’t make it in the Gauteng list. That goes to discredit these lists.
Nush says
Seems private schools are not exactly on this list much, and they are by far superior to that of the government school. For example I went to Durban Girls’ High in KwaZulu Natal and the students’ education and abilities were far less than when I went to St. Mary’s D.S.G and yet that school isn’t even listed!?
Barry says
Well… I can’t complain 😛 My school in Western Cape is at the top 😛
Graham Howes says
As public servant in the department for education in the Western Cape, and based on results and data that I handle on a daily basis I can tell you that this list holds no weight in terms of its title “top schools” There is no criteria given for the definition of ‘top school’ nor have they mentioned what data was used in this ranking. Please ignore this list.
LARRY HOMANN says
complete bullshit
Matt says
Hahaha! I can not take this list seriously at all! Load of rubbish!
FunFunRahRah says
I’m very pleased to see my old school is one of the best in the country and beats some of the posh private schools. At the same, some of the critics have a fair point: as far as I can make out from the garbled introduction, these rankings give us an idea of which schools make the best use of the resources at their disposal to get as many pupils to pass Matric as possible. It doesn’t really tell us about the quality of education any particular pupil will have at those schools.
Class size is an important factor in quality of education. I know this from when I was a student and I know this now as a teacher. The private schools have this advantage and rather than sweeping it under the carpet with statistics, the Education Department should be working to improve teacher-pupil ratios all over.
U_mad? says
LOL @ all you butthurt guys…
“why isnt my school on this list? Herp Derp”
Thats because your school isnt in the top 10…
You mad? yea you mad cuz
Trish says
serious sour grapes in the comments!
Jackie says
According to this report The Dept of Basic Education have retracted from the equation any and all schools that have achieved a 100% pass rate because they have decided that all these “retracted” schools have smaller classes and can therefore achieve better results (and so they must be punished??). So – it is our fault that the “Department” cannot provide and pay for sufficient teachers to accomodate those areas that have a high number of students !?!?!. This not only takes away the well deserved high placing of many of the schools left in the list but it also punishes the schools who take action to compensate for our Governments lack of provision for the education of our very precious assets – our children – whether from wealthy or poor backgrounds. Shame on you Department of Education !!! Spend less on your high class parties, travelling and luxuries and more on education and making sure that books, schools and teachers are provided and watch what happens !!
Terry Glen says
This list is flawed, we cannot take such information seriously, the credibility of this website has just been shattered.
esther strydom says
Retief hoer skool is the best pass rate alway Good I say. Pele ya pele. I wld incourage they gv scholarship in kids who do good on academic and sports. Science etc then wil be top teachers en principal do good job en I wish parents can be more involve in their kids so they archive more

Melisa says
Whooo hooo let’s go Pietermaritzburg girls high! I wanna go there so badly:'(!!! Great job top 5 wow!
ANTON says
The list is seriously flawed so it is not worth even getting upset with it! Whoever ranked the schools must explain how the list was compiled and show the raw scores.
Jessica says
How come upland prep and college is not on there under mpumalamga and we ARE the BEST school in mpumalanga
anton says
How come Collegiate ranks only 6 in Eastern Cape 100% pass rate 96% varsity pass 377 A pass in subject 143 students in Matric 20 students wit 6 or more A’s. Average of over 2.5 A’s per student. 38 A’s in English HL. This far better than any other East Cape School and I am sure knocks most schools in the Country.
