Top 10 Secondary Schools in Ghana

The secondary school system in Ghana has produced many capable and well-rounded graduates over the years. As such, secondary schools in Ghana constantly compete to be the best and attract the best students to their schools. Secondary School Progression in Ghana

a) Junior High School (JHS)

  • Junior High School lasts for three years, catering to pupils between 12 and 15.
  • The core subjects include English, Mathematics, Integrated Science, and Social Studies, while the electives include Technical Skills, ICT, and French.
  • At the end of Junior High School, pupils sit for the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE). The results of this examination determine placement into Senior High Schools.

b) Senior High School (SHS)

  • Senior High School also lasts for three years, catering to pupils between 15 and 18.
  • The core subjects and elective programs for this level are General Arts, General Science, Business, Technical, and Vocational.
  • Pupils sit for the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) at the end of the three years. The results of this examination determine where the pupil will proceed to for tertiary education.

Secondary School Examination System in Ghana

The secondary school examination system in Ghana is designed to evaluate pupils’ academic progress and readiness for higher education or entry into the workforce.

Examination Administration

  • These examinations are conducted by the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
  • Assessments are done in the form of written, practical, and oral examinations.

1. Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE)

  • This examination takes place at the end of Junior High School (JHS). It is taken after three years of JHS education and determines placement into Senior High Schools (SHS).

2. West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE)

  • This examination takes place at the end of Senior High School (SHS), after three years of SHS education. It is also conducted by the WAEC.
  • Grades for this examination are awarded on a scale from A1 (highest) to F9 (lowest). These grades then determine the institution that the pupil will proceed to for tertiary studies.
