Michaelhouse should be better
1. very stable college culture and traditional,
2. stronger union spirit and international schoolmates link management.
3. educated boys independence and fighting for their future and for society benefit as well, not only by academics and sports…
Barry says
Hilton College is without a doubt the best secondary school in the country. Not only is it academically sound and successful on the sports field but also fosters cultural excellence second to none. When the Hilton boy leaves he is truly the most well rounded gentleman produced by any school in the country.
swazi says
Any list without Maritzburg College is missing focus on the well-rounded and high-performing nature of this 150-year old institution
johnnie says
It is easy. Distinctions per student determines the top academic school. If the method is used it should be Menlopark Pretoria.

Paarl Boys’ High!!!

Paarl Boys’ High School
Kearsney was robbed says
All credit should go to paarl boys high because this is a remarkable acheivment Paarl boys should be placed above a school such as grey college… As these are both sporting institutions. But do yo believe a secondary school should be ranked on sport alone? As I believe a high school should be ranked on all sports, culture, academics and most importantly if they produce scholars of integrity and honour. All of these should be factored in when deciding the top ten of schools and not just a schools fame because they are known to be the best rugby school around.
Carol Moolman says
Paarl Boys High. Number one in rugby and cricket this year.
Piet says
Paarl Boys High Number one school in rugby this year.
kearsney was robbed says
Kearsney should be in the top 10 no doubt in my mind… But at the same time Michealhouse and Hilton also deserve to be there. But schools like grey college or pretoria boys high school ranking in the top 10 perplexes me, those results are based on rugby and past acheivments. For all of you who are arguing that maritzburg college should feature need to take a current look at the school. The academics aren’t as good as previous years and they don’t feature as promently in sport any more… Kearsney embarassed their 1st XV on live TV and even beat their “unbeatable” hockey side.
kearsney was robbed says
“Kearsney College has achieved phenomenal results in the IEB examination marks released on Wednesday, with 50% of boys who wrote Mathematics attaining distinctions.
The 116 boys who wrote Matric achieved a staggering 244 distinctions between them.
2011 Dux Nicol Pirow placed in the top 1% of IEB candidates throughout South Africa in six or more subjects, and received eight distinctions, with Dominic Koenig, Murray Polkinghorne and Thomas Rich placing in the top 5% of all IEB candidates in five or more subjects.
While 48 of the 97 boys who wrote Maths received As, 71% of Kearsney’s Maths candidates achieved an A, B or C symbol in the subject.
In Physical Science, 33% of boys who wrote the subject received distinctions, while 80% received an A, B or C symbol.
The results in other subjects were also impressive. In Accounting, 41% of candidates received distinctions; 38% in Life Sciences and 63% in EGD. In English, there were 19% subject distinctions.
Kearsney College had a 100% pass rate, with 93% achieving a bachelor’s degree pass.
Recognition must also go to the six boys who achieved subject distinctions with marks in the top 1% – Tyron Stroberg and Willem Brooks in EGD; Mudiwa Mupfanochiya in English (Home Language); Ntobeko Sibisi in isiZulu (2nd Language); Rowan Page in Life Orientation and Ross Bennewith in Physical Science.”
Not only did Kearsney acheive these outstanding results academically but on the sports field Kearsney also shined, last year Kearsneys 1st XV placed 1st in the province and in the top 10 in south africa and they followed that result up with a to top 20 finish this year and 3 of the pupils represented SA schools. Kearsneys choir once again shone and acheived a 1st place at the world choir games in their chosen category, which resulted in them being crowned world champions and what makes this remarkable is that adult choirs competed as well. Kearsneys cricket side was placed 2nd in the province this season and Kearsneys 1st hockey side went unbeaten the whole season. If these are not good enough credentials to make it into the top 10 then I’m not sure what is? Kearsney upstaged their local “rivals” Hilton and Michealhouse in all facets of a schools purpose except for rugby in which KearsneY finished second to Michealhouse

Clarendon High School For Girls is amongst the top top single sex schools in South Africa.
The mistake that most people make is believing that the more you pay…the better the school is but Clarendon is reasonable in cost and offers the best facilities.
Clarendon School for Girls has Old girls like Zizo Beda and Joan Harrison and many others(just mentioning a few). Girls are taught to be independent and smart in all areas of there lives so with that i would like to state that Clarendon School For Girls is one of the Best High schools in South Africa.

there we go again – money doesn’t produce an intelligent product. this site is for ACADEMIC RESULTS, NOT rugby or cricket or even chess!
just because a school has that one or two or three odd jocks that play for Bafana Bafana – doesn’t mean its the best academic institution… so lets try this again 🙂
top 5 should include: clarendon Girls – east london ( 4.1)
affies – pretoria ( 4.1)
westville(GIRLS!) – Durban ( 3.9)
grey college – bloemfontien ( 3.9)
st. Johns houghton – johanessburg(4.0)
…. top 20 includes schools like maritzburg high ( 3.6), pearson high(3.1), afrikaans school for girls( 3.8), bishops etc…
HILTON – 56th ( 1.8)
MICHEAL – 69th ( 1.4)
^for that debate that was going on 🙂

Hello all.
I am Zimbabwean and we have a rather similar situation here as well we have very expensive schools that dont do that well in academics but they have means and ways of getting their students at the top and we also have mission schools that produce excellent academic results and government schools which most are just average. I will give examples of schools here in Zimbabwe we Have Peterhouse, St Georges College, St Johns College Harare, Falcon College, Arundel,Girls College, Lomagundi School, this makes the afluent schools and then we have Prince Edward School, Allan Wilson, Marondera High School, Victoria High School, Girls High School, then we have the likes of St Augastines, St Mary’s St Johns Chikwaka , St Annes Goto completing the mission schools list
Now have anyone ever noticed that the kids from most of these afluent schools rarely become employees but employers or at the least CEOs? In most cases they are not drilled to pass exams they are tutored in a rather well rounded manner fit any role in life. Because of the financial muscles of their schools most of them takeup subjects or even courses that avarage public schools cant afford to offer. I will give an example of a private school here in Zim that offers so many subjects that most of them are practicals and by the time a student leaves that school he holds a high school public exam certificate plus a proffessional qualification at either Diploma level or the least National Foundation Certificate which means employers would rather go for that boy than a half baked boy with high academic passes and little exposure to the practical world. There are also advantages of academic passes that they guarantee you a place at University and brighten up ones career prospects but let me remind you a University qualification might even worsen your situation after all the worlds leading business people rarely have a University degree…
The issue here is these schools aim for different target markets and produce students for different roles in society so in the end it comes down to fullfilling the National interests not petty school arguments
cheers

Michaelhouse, Hilton and Kearsney should all be top 10! A school which is only good at sports does not make it a good school but these 3 schools excel academically and at sports with many Springboks attending them. On top of it all they are CLASSY!!!

It is very difficult to rate the top High Schools in the country. It seems that most people have favoured Michaelhouse, Hilton and Kearsney. Maritzburg College is much more affordable and has been a dominant sporting school in the past 149 years and has produced some excellent academic results with one of it’s pupils being ranked second in the country in 2011(not bad going for a sporting school). 2011 saw an unbeaten hockey side that boasted 4 SA under 19 players and 1 SA under 17 player in the first XI. The school has produced various South African sporting heroes in the form of Joel Stransky, Butch James, Jonty Rhodes and many others in it’s proud 149 years. The old boys are very passionate about the school and are more than happy to give back to the school which gave them so much. It is a very underrated school.
Martin says
The best school is either Malvern High in Jhb. or Highlands North Boys High.
Viking says
Absurd that Maritzburg College are not on the list.
Joshua Elliot – sorry to break it to you but College got more than 27 with 6xA’s, they had 22 with 7As and more, 5 with 9As and one with 11. They were second only to Westville Girls in KZN.
College will be 150 years old next year and is unmatched in KZN, newcomers like Westville can catch up over the next 100 years.
