10. Prince Edward School

  • The school is amongst the oldest in the country and has been on its present site of 60 acres since 1926. We enroll; pupils from all over Zimbabwe and neighbouring countries and are heavily over-subscribed. We are the pre-eminent government school in the country and compete successfully with all schools in the country and regionally. The school attempts to produce a well-rounded individual where each of the boys participates in the Academic, Sporting and Cultural aspects on offer to them.

9. Speciss College

  • Hundreds of thousands of Zimbabweans trained by the country’s most respected college hold lucrative, useful and satisfying jobs in Zimbabwe and throughout the rest of the world. Speciss College has over the last 45 years empowered Zimbabweans to help themselves. Today it can empower you too!

8. Dominican Convent

  • is the oldest established school in Harare. It was founded in 1892 by Mother Patrick, an Irish nun, with 10 pupils. Originally the school was co-educational, but after ten years, a separate school, Hartmann House, was established for boys.

7. Watershed College

  • A Private School situated in a pastoral setting near the town of Marondera in Zimbabwe. The College aims to provide an excellent all-round secondary education for girls and boys which assists them to develop their talents and prepares them to become socially well integrated individuals.

6. Harare International School

  • includes Grades 9 through 12, with this year’s Seniors forming H.I.S.’s seventh graduating class.  H.I.S. High School currently enrolls approximately 110 students in Grades 9-12 and provides a complete college preparatory program with a selection of electives and extra-curricular activities.

5. Peterhouse

  • Founded in 1955 as an independent, Anglican boarding school for boys aged 12 to 18, it has now expanded to include two other schools as well: a co-educational preparatory school, Springvale House and Peterhouse Girls’ School. The schools are controlled by a Board of Governors who include: Dr N A F Williams (Patron), Mr J D Carter ( Chairman, ex Chairman of Barclays Bank, Zimbabwe) Senior Minister, the Hon Didymus Mutasa, and others. The schools occupy a 3 000 acre site straddling the main Harare-Mutare road, 85 kilometres south-east of Harare; 700 acres of this form our game park, Gosho Park.
  • There are 480 boys (all boarders) at Peterhouse, and across the road we now have two associated schools: Springvale House is a 220 strong Preparatory School for boys and girls (weekly boarders and day scholars), Peterhouse Girls’ has 290 pupils (almost all of whom are boarders) Post-O Level girls come over to Peterhouse for lessons.

4. Chisipite Girls High

  • The school is founded on Christian principles with a philosophy embodied in the lines from the school song “to be brave and strong and true and to fill with the world with love my whole life through”.
  • We are proud of the atmosphere of caring and concern for others for which the school is known. It is hoped that each member of the school community will develop a sense of belonging while being accepted and valued as an individual.

3. Arundel Girls High

2. St. George’s College

  • a private Catholic boys school (Form One to Upper Six) based in Harare, Zimbabwe. It is arguably the oldest formal school established in Zimbabwe..The school is a boys school, whereby young adolescents enter-’Salvete’ and leave the college -’Valete’ as young men; Boys To Men. In the 1990’s, for Physic Science, young women of high intellect, from the Dominican Convent, were enrolled for the senior years (Lower Six & Upper Six). The school is presently located in the Capital City, Harare on Hartmann Hill, in the leafy suburb of Borrowdale
  • This lead to the relocation of the school site from Bulawayo to Harare. Thus the beginning of Saint George’s College, affectionately known as (Saints). On the same site, a preparatory primary school was established called Hartmann House. This site is next to the official Zimbabwe State House, and the Official President’s House called Zimbabwe House.
  • It is a very competitive School for one to enter,as an entrance examination has to be taken to enter Form One, and Lower Sixth Form.Students coming from Hartmann House are exempt from these exams as they automatically enter Saints.

1. St Johns College

  • St John’s Educational Trust governs two schools; St John’s Preparatory School for Boys and St John’s College. Both are independent day schools and members of the Association of Trust Schools of Zimbabwe (ATS). The Headmasters are members of the Conference of Heads of Independent Schools of Zimbabwe (CHISZ).
  • The College admits boys from the age of 12 to 18 and has a limited number of places for girls in the International Baccalaureate programme in the sixth form. While all Grade 7 pupils are required to sit the CHISZ Common Entrance Examination, most boys who elect to go on to the College are accepted. The continuity of ethos and St John’s spirit is recognized and fostered.

    Oh and @pinky

girl what the fuck you are freaking comparing schools based on the number of buses they have…
wake up call sweeie-pie vale hasn’t been in the running for anything in a very long while!!!
the buses you so proudly speak of are always dying in the middle of the road and causing unbearable congestion during peak hours, its about time they got new ones!!! convent may not have the on campus facilities readily available, but the facilities are provided and they always woop your asses anyway that why you are so bitter.
oh and another thing they don’t need so many buses because the school is not situated in the middle of industry/high density suburbs in the middle of nowhere. all the they need is one dope marcopole complete with dvd and fitted tv’s a couple of smaller buses and several mini-vans (makombi- incase you didn’t know what mini-vans are!!!)
face it vale sucks at everything!!! even simple location 😉 LMFAO

most of the people commenting on this list are actually really stupid… no hating or anything, but if all you people from these random schools recall, you all had no teachers for a while, which makes your school suck for not being able to retain teachers, if your schools are soooo good (emphasis on good) why was there an attempted mass exodus from your schools by those that could afford, into the private school system??? and even having the audacity to mention “zimsec top flyers,” when you know very well the amount of scandal surrounding the board, the inconsistencies and the inability to deliver when they are required to. You seriously need to check your facts before you go on ranting and raving about nothing. Most private schools write zimsec o’level in form 3 and get a 100% pass rate! you are only very familiar with zimsec rankings because no one bothers to publish cambridge rankings in the newspapers! did you know that arundel is the highest ranking african school on the cambridge exam board, and zimbabwean schools rank very highly on that international board. just because the schools are not bothered with zimsec does not make your schools any better than ours. all they are doing, is striving for excellence and broadening opportunities.
    speciss does not belong!!!!!!!!!!!1
    P.s. get over it…!!! 😉

These schools have very high standards and foster discipline, responsibility, team work and other qualities in their students but in terms of academic results no ways are they the best unless if you are only considering Cambridge students. I will put Marist Nyanga, St Ignatious, St Augustines, Bonda, Kutama, St Faith Rusape, St Dominics, Kriste Mambo in the TOP 10.These are the consistent and perennial high flyers for Zimsec exams.

this list is actually quite disturbing if u look in recent times certainly schools like saints johns arundel and falcon and hous hav maintained high standards bt we tend to forget tht ther r schools like gateway that have also emerged and offer high quality education and infrastructure as well as placing emphasis on other cultural and sporting activities which to me is essential if u r to b considerd a top class school if sum of u ignorant pple are basin this list on th amount of fees u pay then clearly a school like gateway would be on top 4 ur infomation coz they pay twice th amount a skul like eaglesvale pays nd bliev me im nt jus tokin crap itz a fact

  48. Dragon says

    November 14, 2010 at 6:41 pm

I find this to be really funny. You are all indoctrinated. You think your school is the best just because you liked it. Most of you have not even spent more than two minutes to think about what a good school is. Judging from the spelling on this post I should not be surprised. Some posts campaign against your school. There is little class or wit in these posts.
Just because you had a few prominent school leavers does not make a school good. If your school consistently produces prominent leavers well good, but that can simply mean your school was very selective.
If we start talking academics, Sports, drama, arts, culture, publicity, international exposure well, now we start to talk good schools. Some of the schools that people are going on about are very much single focus school. To put it in simple English, that means schools which only do one thing well (like academics).
I do agree that this list is biased. Possibly because the schools that are not on the list do not take the time and effort to be ranked.
Seriously, let us have some more serious discussion not “my school is the best”
