Opoku Ware School Introduces Computerized Teaching With Smart Classroom

    By Appau Aheng/Angel FM, Kumasi

As a means to promoting interactive teaching at the school, the Opoku Ware Senior High School has introduced a more modernized way of teaching, the Smart Technology Classroom.

Many educationists over the years have advocated for the adoption of interactive ways of teaching to enhance the learners’ participation and understanding of what they are taught or what they learn on their own in the classroom. In the light of this a more interactive way of teaching and learning called the Smart board Technology has been introduced and used by countries like America, Canada and Australia.

The Smart board technology which is a computerized system operates on a whiteboard which facilitates the use of texts, pictures and videos for teaching all kinds of subjects. It has an inbuilt mechanism that has an electronic pen which produces characters that are converted into word document forms.

In addition, the system has the capacity of automatically generating questions for students to answer after a lesson has been taught and can translate texts written in English into French whilst giving the student the opportunity to use social media applications like Wassap, Skype, Viber, Facebook and Tango.

The Smart Board Technology allows the teacher to upload needed lesson notes, videos and images unto the system to assist teaching and learning. The internet element in the Board gives the users the opportunity to access more information, and this makes it easier for the students to learn on their own even if the teacher is not present in class. And it enables the class to share an ongoing lesson with other students in another Smart classroom or even those in another school who have the facility.

It is also connected to the students’ computers, which makes it possible for students to access the teacher’s presentation during the lesson.

Currently, the Opoku Ware School has three of their classrooms equipped with the technology which are fully operating.

According to the Headmaster of the school, Mr F.M Oppong Mensah, the idea of establishing the Smart Board Technology in his school came up when he visited schools in the U.S and Canada on an educational and cultural tour where he observed the use of the technology in their schools.

That the introduction of the facility has contributed immensely to the students’ understanding of lessons they hitherto found difficult to grasp due to the abstract nature of presentations on them by teachers. He stated that a special training workshop had been organized for the teachers in the school on the operation of the Board and through that all the teachers are able to use it in their lesson delivery.

Mr. Oppong Mensah commended the Parent-Teacher Association of the school for providing the school with the machines but bemoaned that it was the intention of the school and the PTA to have expanded the technology but the resent restrictions by the government on the collection of fees has crippled their plans.

He appealed to the government, old students of the school, groups and individuals to proffer support to the school to help the school in their intended expansion of the Smart Board Technology.

•Opoku Ware School has won the National Science And Maths Quiz Competitions two (2) times – in 1997 and 2002 – and has appeared in the finals six (6) times. In 1997, Kwadwo Nkansah Osei-Agyemang particularly stood out with his exceptional ability in Maths, Physics and Chemistry, and also that quiz team in 1997 was so exceptional in the answering of the riddles round.

•Opoku Ware School is the only school in Ghana who have handed the heaviest NATIONAL SCIENCE AND MATHS QUIZ defeat to Prempeh College, one of the grade A schools in Ghana, in a 96–46 score that shocked the air waves in Ghana.

    •

•The school has won 9 out of the 13 Superzonals in recent years in the Ashanti region.

•The school has produced several national athletes and Olympians including Ohene Karikari, Sandy Osei Agyemang, and Christian Nsiah.

•Until the 1980s, OWASS as they are affectionately called was the only authorised test center for the administration of TOEFL and SAT exams in Ghana

    More to come.

your so called Interpoll is a self made poll and should be taken with a grain of salt. Below is an actual (WAEC) School ranking from 2014 by WASCCE results.

The Results will be dispatched to the respective schools.

According to unconfirmed reports gathered by OMG!Ghana, here is how the schools in Ghana faired. Did yours make the list?

    Hi there,
I’m quite surprised by how and where you guys get your statistics for ranking the best second-cycle schools in Ghana. For starters, some of the best schools, namely, Ghana Secondary Technical School, in Takoradi (formerly Government Secondary Technical School – GSTS), Navrongo Secondary School, Mawuli School, to mention a few, do not even appear on your top 20 list. How could anyone put their trust in your rankings, given the way they are heavily skewed towards certain regions and the capital, and given that you do not even care to provide the basis and criteria for your rankings. Second, just read carefully a recent newspaper article from Ghana (below) about the consistently best performing schools over the last 5 consecutive years, and you wonder why GSTS (founded by the British Colonial Government in 1909, and older than Adisadel and Achimota schools) is not at the top of your list, let alone mentioned anywhere in your top ten list for 2014. Third, there seems to be an inherent bias towards Accra Academy and Adisadel College for some reason; don’t know why. To conclude, please do the right thing; do your homework well before putting out such school rankings on the Internet. Potential students and their parents deserve unbiased rankings, based on solid research, appropriate data analysis and facts on the ground.
