We are pleased to announce our Top 10 Secondary Schools in Ghana for 2011. This years list remains similar to last years in many ways with PRESEC and Accra Academy maintaining the number one and two rankings respectively. Great work.
This year will welcome two new schools to our top 10, they are Achimota and Mfantsipim Secondary School. Both these schools made the top ten list in 2008 Rankings and 2009 Rankings were missing last year (2010 Rankings) and have returned this year – well done.
Readers will also note the addition of an honorable mention section. This nine schools, although not making the official top ten list are deserving of mention for their strong performance. We are pleased to include Kumasi Anglican and T.I Ahymadiyya, along with the seven others, to the list and commend them all for good years.

10. Achimota School
- (formerly Prince of Wales College and School, Achimota, now nicknamed Motown), is an elite and highly selective co-educational secondary school located at Achimota in Accra, Ghana.
9. St. Peter’s Secondary School, Nkwatia (PERSCO)
- P.O.Box 17 Nkwatia – Eastern Region, Ghana
8. Mfantsipim Secondary School
- This is Mfantsipim, the school whose history spells the very history of Ghana, especially in the area of the development of Secondary Education and the decolonization of Ghana.
7. Wesley Girls’ High School (Wey Gey Hey)
- a prestigious educational institution for girls, was named after the founder of Methodism, John Wesley. The school was established in 1836 with 25 girls by the wife of a Methodist Minister. It started as a primary school with the aim of offering girls proper training in reading and writing, sewing and house-keeping and more especially in moral and spiritual development. In spite of its staggered history of collapse and revival, the school survived and graduated into a secondary institution. From such humble beginnings, the school is now one of the leading schools in the country.
6. St. Augustine College (Augusco)
- The school was founded in 1930 initially to train teachers. It is now a senior secondary school. There are about 1500 boys, aged between 12 and 19 years. It has 60 full-time and 6 part-time teachers along with about 80 non-teaching staff. The headmaster and his two assistants have direct oversight of the school’s administration.
- It is a boys school with a population of about1300 students. The school has accommodation facilities for almost all the students. The students age ranges between 14 to 18 years. The school is highly competitive in the current upward trend of the country. It is well known for producing some of the brightest students and has a firm alumni base. (Quote from school website)

4. Prempeh
- Prempeh College, the Asante Royal Boarding School for Boys of all ethnic backgrounds is the Kings College of Ghana. Founded in 1949 by Asantehene Sir Osei Agyemang Prempeh II, it is located in a surburb of Kumasi (the Ashanti Regional capital) called Sofoline.
- The mission of Prempeh College is to serve the community, the nation, and the world by educating and preparing students to discharge the offices of life with usefulness and reputation. We do this through a partnership of students and teachers in a unified community known as a college.
- As Adisadel College looks towards it’s 100th birthday in 2010 it is worth noting that this institution has not only made itself felt but actually contributed its share to the development and progress of the nation in diverse ways.
- Over the years, the School has turned out into the world a steady stream of keen, capable young men, filled with enthusiasm and dedicated to the service of the country and of mankind – men who have contributed and continue to contribute their quota to the enrichment of the life of the nation, in practically all fields of human endeavour. This can be attributed to the life-long preparations given to it’s students through education.

I don’t have a problem with the ranking as they obviously reflect results gained from some tests. What I do question is the credibility of the testers and reporters of the test. I’ll illustrate:1. You couldn’t even spell ‘Mfantsiman’ well leaving the impression they’re just the female side of ‘Mfantsipim’. 2. Holico is called Holy Child School NOT ‘Holy Child catholic…’. 3. All you could say about St. Peter’s was its box number and yet you seem to know a lot about Prempeh and some other schools – do I sense some bias here? I would expect anyone who’d attempt such a ranking to at least learn about the schools. 4. MY SCHOOL IS ST. AUGUSTINE’S COLLEGE NOT St. Augustine College. I wouldn’t care about anyone who couldn’t get names right to get any kind of ranking right…

hello Persco papa i get your point. i’ve been to this site many times and i’ve seen how the Aquinas boys behave here. no one questions their position in the league of Ghana second cycle schools; the point is they have the tendency to come here and denigrade/disrespect other schools all because their school (Aquinas) is not included on the list. like the guy from Augusco said they need to show some respect to those on the list because those schools deserve to be mentioned and they have tremedous history and tradition. those schools have produced the best personilites in academia both home and abroad and are still doing great things. so those Aquinas boys need to show some respect to them. u are speaking of a certain rivlary that exist. this has nothing to do with rivalry or jealousy. no one is jealous of Aquinas..as a matter of they are a less known school throughout the nation due to their lack of boarding facilities and other stuff. they are a decent school. but they need to know that their school is not onthe list most likley because all those ten schools are ahead of them.

I don’t understand why Owass is crying foul.Make your case and stop attacking other schools.Which ever way you see it Aquinas has more media attention and recognition than Owass you can’t deny that.Diplomacy is one of the reasons of conspicuously making your presents felt.Owass does not have that and Aquinas has it .If you search through the internet and other high schools web sites,Owass are hardly mentioned sometimes you even forget about their existence as a force in Ghanaian education .Prempeh college has completely over shadowed Owass and no one can deny to this fact.
There is more to a school being great than just winning a national science and maths quiz with only three science students representing the entire school.
The story might have been different had it been business or general art students.
After all from all your so called academic acumen that you don’t allow us to sleep over in the entire history of your school you have produced only one recognizable person and he name is Akwasi Appaih who even licks the foot of the white coaches and has continually played second fiddle to them.He has been under studying the job for sometime now yet he even failed miserably when the care taker coach was given to him after the departure of the head coach.

Please you have to tell your readers that these your rankings are not based on any recognized national academic fact, but rather based mostly on student voting. meaning the more a particular school’s students vote, the higher that school is placed on the ranking. For instance how can you place schools like presec, accra academy, adisadel college, augusco, prempeh ahead of Mfantsipim and Achimota , who have no past or present academic history or products better than these two schools. know this, when you even come to the central region, the two topmost schools have always been Mfantsipim and WEY GEY HEY in term of every aspect of education, so how come.
