I commend whoever came up with this noble initiative. I think it will promote growth in our education sector. However there is need for clarity on the criteria used in selecting the schools. We also need detailed profiles of the schools inclusive of pictures. Then people should be allowed to come up with nominations.
The preliminary stages should involve categories like the school of sporting excellence ( sub category with schools of specific sport excellence e.g best school in waterpolo), academic excellence ( Zimsec, Cambridge and IB should be put i different categories )etc. Then you consider the most visible school in all forms of media, the most marketed school. Other interesting categories are the school with the most active old students society, most organised administration and parents board, best transport system, fulfillment of fixtures, interaction with local, regional and international schools, the greenest, most innovative, best mantained(infrastrure) and best developed for that year. You shoud also consider contribution to society, diversity of the student’s body and visibility on the regional and internationai level. We also need to appreciate institutions which offer more than avarage for instance schools with unique sports or facilities e.g game reserves e.t.c The problem with most Zimbabweans is emphasis on academics only. We do not realise the importance of sporting and extracurricum activities on personal development. We should give credit to schools which try to groom balanced people. Its sad when you go to local varsities and you notice that most students have amazing academic results but lack essential social skills in etiqute and language. The trend around the world is grooming open minded, critical reasoners, innovative and creative people with diverse knowledge. No wonder why curriculums like IB and institutions like waterford college (swaziland) and african leaders academy ( South Africa) are becoming more reputable. For the rankings to be fair you should consider former group A schools government schools, former group B government schools, private schools, international school and mission schools separately. You could start ranking them at provincial level. Finally after considering all the above mentioned things and others you come up up with the best schools overally.

oh and BTW there is absolutely nothing spectacular about the saints entrance its the exact same exam that all the other trust schools write (Johns, arundel, chisi, house, gundi etc.) so don’t fool yourselves…!!! you are not that spectacular…!!!

  40. tatz says

    January 20, 2011 at 10:03 pm

what the fuck is gundi doing on the list??? who even talks about it, it practically sucks at everything…
watershed does not deserve a spot at all it is just filled with complete uselessness. as you can clearly see, it was crossed out from the honourable mentions list. at least gundi is a school of some substance. no one hates p.e its standards did go down drastically when times were tough, but it is the only non-private school that managed to stay afloat, so get over it. and i think the person who did this survey didn’t do much reasearch on the matter at hand… they have practically nothing to say about some of the better schools, ie. st. johns college, arundl school, and the dominican convent (harare). and to have practically nothing to say about the oldest school (convent) the school that pretty much started it all is a little insulting. and the survey itself is a little biased because these results all depend on how many people knew about the survey, what school they went to, and what they know about the other schools, if they even know anything!
