- Liberia, just like every other country in Africa, is experiencing growth in its educational sector as more young people embrace the value of education as a tool to equip them for the future.
- Before we look at the top secondary schools, here is a brief outline of the secondary school system in Liberia.
Overview of the Secondary School System in Liberia
Liberia’s school system follows a 6-3-3-4 structure as follows:
- 6 years of primary school
- 3 years of junior secondary (lower secondary) school
- 3 years of senior secondary (upper secondary) school
- 4 years of higher education (university or college)
The secondary school system is done in two phases.
a) Junior Secondary School (Grades 7-9)
- This stage, also called junior high school, comes after primary school and before senior secondary school.
- The curriculum taught at this stage prepares students for the WAJSCE (West African Junior School Certificate).
b) Senior Secondary School (Grades 10-12)
- This stage is also called the senior high school stage. It offers a broader curriculum that includes specialized subjects in Arts, Business, Science, etc.
- At the end of this study period, students take the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), administered by WAEC (West African Examinations Council).
- The results of this examination (WASSCE results) determine university admission.
