- The American University (AU) Emerging Global Leader Scholarship promotes educational access and opportunity while enhancing international diversity.
- This scholarship brings together the best of AU — academic excellence, leadership development, and global engagement, molding the AU Emerging Global Leader into an individual who inspires, achieves, and serves with vision.
- The AU Emerging Global Leader is dedicated to positive civic and social change, and to returning home to improve under-resourced, underserved communities in his/her home country.

What does the scholarship cover?
- There are full and partial scholarships available. The full scholarship covers all billable AU expenses for two international students who require a visa (preferably an F-1 or J-1 student visa) to study in the United States. These expenses include full tuition, room, and board. The full scholarship is renewable for a total of four years of undergraduate study, based on continued satisfactory academic performance.
- The partial scholarship covers billable expenses for up to US$40,000/per year.
How many scholarships are given?
- Two (2) full scholarships and eight (8) partial scholarships.
Which countries are targeted?
- This scholarship is open to foreign citizens from all countries.
- U.S. citizens, U.S. pending permanent residents, U.S. permanent residents, and dual citizens of the U.S. and another country are not eligible to apply.
Am I Eligible to Apply?
To qualify for this scholarship, you must have:
- A minimum 3.8 GPA equivalent (or in the top 10% of graduating class) for 9th-12th grades;
- a demonstrated commitment to leadership, volunteerism, community service, and to advancing the needs of people in your home country;
- excellent oral and written communication skills in English, with a minimum of 95 for TOEFL iBT, 7.0 for IELTS, 33 minimum SAT reading sub-score, sub-scores of 24+ on the paper-based TOEFL, or any equivalent qualification;
- overcome various obstacles and challenges concerning your education;
- come from diverse and unrepresented global and socioeconomic backgrounds; and
- enrolled in secondary or high school and planning to graduate by June 2025.
NOTE:
- If you are enrolled or have already begun any post-secondary studies at another university in your home country or the US, you are not eligible for this scholarship.
How do I Apply – Next Steps
- Step 1: If you want to apply for the AU EGLS full or partial scholarships, first submit your Common or Coalition application and all supporting documents by the application deadline.
- Step 2: Submit your AU EGL Scholarship application and essays via your applicant portal (available on the university website) by the deadline.
- Note that you must complete Step 1 before submitting the AU EGLS application.
