Canon Collins Postgraduate Scholarships

  • Since 2011, the Canon Collins Trust has been running postgraduate scholarships for Southern African students.
  • The Trust has since supported more than 3500 scholars from 14 Southern African countries.
  • The Canon Collins Trust firmly believes that postgraduate education is both empowering for individuals and transformative for communities as a whole.

Scholarship Overview

  • This scholarship program seeks to support exceptional individuals who are committed to social justice in Southern Africa, as well as those who view a postgraduate qualification as an essential tool in working to create an open and just society.
  • Eligible applicants are automatically considered for these scholarships – the Ros Moger and Terry Furlong Scholarships, and the Sol Plaatje Canon Collins Scholarships.

  • Justice – including Law, Economics, Politics and the Environment
  • Education – Policy and Practice
  • Humanities – including Literature, Anthropology, History and the Arts.

What does the scholarship cover?

  • Recipients receive R70,000 for each year of study at Masters and PhD level
  • The amount awarded supports both full and part-time study
  • In some cases, R100,000 per year is awarded.

How many scholarships are given?

  • Awards are made on the basis of available funding and suitable applicants

Which countries are targeted?

  • Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Zambia and Zimbabwe

Am I Eligible to Apply?

To apply for this scholarship, you should:-

  • Be a national of, or have refugee status in any of the countries listed above
  • Be a resident in one of the countries named above
  • Have a good first degree (a minimum of a second class, upper division or its equivalent), or be about to graduate in the year of application
  • Be studying or applying to study at a South African university

Note: Only apply if you are eligible for this scholarship.

How Do I Apply – Next Steps

  • To apply for this scholarship, access the online application form on the Canon Collins Scholarship website.
  • Full instructions are provided when you start a new form.
  • All sections of the form should be completed for the system to allow the form to be submitted
  • You can save the information you have put on the application form, and edit it several times until you are ready to submit it.

Supporting Documents

The following documents must be attached to your application.

  • Copies of degree certificates, if available
  • Certified academic transcripts
  • An identification document (Identity Card, Driving License, Birth Certificate or Passport)
  • Additional documents that may be required include:
    • Proof of refugee status if applicable
    • Two recent pay slips (for those currently employed)
    • PhD proposal (if applicable)
