Chinese Government Bilateral Scholarship Program

  • The Chinese Government Scholarships are awarded by the Chinese Scholarship Council (CSC) to international students in Chinese Universities affiliated with the CSC.

Scholarship Overview

  • The Chinese Government has set up a series of scholarship programs to sponsor international students, teachers, and scholars to study and conduct research in Chinese Universities.
  • Under the Bilateral Scholarship Program, scholarships are given based on exchange agreements between the Chinese Government and governments of other countries.
  • This scholarship program supports undergraduates, graduates, general scholars, and senior scholars.
  • Applicants for this scholarship apply directly to the dispatching authorities for overseas study in China within their home countries.

  • Category 1: Philosophy, Economics, Education, Legal Studies, Literature (excluding Fine Arts), Management, History
  • Category 2: Agriculture, Engineering, Science
  • Category 3: Medicine, Fine Arts

NOTE: Undergraduate students must register for Chinese-taught courses. They will then be required to take 1 to 2 years of Chinese language preparatory study.

What does the scholarship cover?

a) Full scholarship waivers

  • Tuition waiver – the funds allocated are used by the host university to cover the student’s education, administrative costs, and expenditure to support student activities.
  • Accommodation – free in the university dormitory. If there is no space in the dorm, an accommodation subsidy is given as follows:
  • Undergraduate/Master’s students – CNY 700 per month
  • Doctoral students and senior scholars – CNY 1000 per month
  • Stipend issued as follows:
  • Undergraduates – CNY 2500 per month
  • Master’s/ General Scholars – CNY 3000 per month
  • Doctoral students/Senior Scholars – CNY 3500 per month
  • Comprehensive medical insurance

b) Partial scholarship waivers

  • One or some of the items listed as part of the full scholarship

Am I Eligible to Apply?

To qualify for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be a citizen of a country other than the People’s Republic of China
  • Be in good health
  • Be under 25 and a high school graduate for undergraduate studies
  • Be under 35 and have a bachelor’s degree for master’s studies
  • Be under 40 and have a master’s degree for doctoral studies
  • Be under 45 and have a high school diploma or higher for the general scholar program
  • Be under 50 and have a master’s degree (or above), or be an associate professor (or above) to qualify to be a senior scholar

How do I Apply – Next Steps

Follow these steps carefully to apply for this scholarship opportunity.

  • Step 1: Apply to the dispatching authority for overseas study in China in your home country
  • Step 2: Apply to your target university for the pre-admission letter once you are recommended by the dispatching authorities as an eligible candidate. (CGS candidates all  receive an award letter)
  • Step 3: Complete the online application procedure at the CGS Information Management System for international students. You are expected to submit the application online and print a hard copy. You may need to consult the dispatching authorities for instructions on the CGS Information Management System for International Students, and the Agency Number.
  • Step 4: Submit all your application documents to the dispatching authorities of your home country before the application deadline.

Note:

  • Only applications of recommended candidates from dispatching authorities will be considered.

Required Documents

  • The application form for the Chinese Government Scholarship (in Chinese or English)
  • Notarized highest diploma (photocopy)
  • Academic transcripts (Chinese or English)
  • A Study Plan or Research Proposal (in Chinese or English). Undergraduate applicants should write a minimum of 200 words, non-degree applicants 500 words, and graduate applicants 800 words.
  • Two recommendation letters (in Chinese or English)
  • A CD of your works (for fine arts students)
  • Valid documents of your guardians in China (if you are under 18)
  • Foreigner physical examination form (photocopy)
  • A copy of the pre-admission letter from the designated Chinese University
  • A copy of the HSK Certificate (if available)

Note:

  • Documents should be bound together at the top left corner, in order
  • Applicants must submit 2 sets of bound documents
  • No application documents will be returned
