Kotzen Scholarship Program

  • Kotzen Scholarships are hosted at Simmons University, a nationally recognized private university located in the heart of Boston.

 Scholarship Overview

  • The Gilbert and Marcia Kotzen Scholars Program, a competitive merit award, recognizes the best and brightest students who are interested in a transformative education at Simmons University.
  • The Kotzen Scholarship is the most prestigious award offered at Simmons University. It acknowledges scholarly research, excellence through focus on study abroad, and intellectual curiosity.

What does the scholarship cover?

  • Full tuition
  • Room & board
  • An additional $3,000 for academic pursuits such as study abroad, research support, etc.

NOTE:

  • This scholarship is awarded for four years, and only applies to full-time undergraduate study.
  • It supersedes any previously awarded merit scholarship from the university. 

How many scholarships are given?

  • 10-15 scholarships

 Am I Eligible to Apply?

To qualify for this scholarship, you must:

  • Be a freshman applicant for the fall semester
  • Be applying for full-time undergraduate study
  • Submit TOEFL and SAT or ACT English proficiency scores
  • Have a GPA of 3.3 or higher (unweighted)
  • Have taken college preparatory curriculum including an advanced level math course during, or before your senior year of high school
  • Have a record of taking honors, advanced placement (AP), and international baccalaureate (IB) courses, as available in your high school systems

NOTE:

  • Students applying for fall 2021 will not be required to submit standardized test scores. For those choosing to submit test scores, a 28 or higher on the ACT is recommended and a 1300 or higher on the SAT.

 How Do I Apply – Next Steps

  • The application consists of a short answer and a formal essay in response to the prompts below, as well as a resume including activities and involvements.
  • Students should submit their essays and resume in PDForWord Docs via email with the subject line “Kotzen Application,” by the application deadline. Each page of the document should include the student’s full name and date of birth.

    Essay prompts
  • Short Answer (of no more than 250 words): Indicate how you would use your additional annual award of $3,000 (for study abroad, short-term courses, summer internship tuition, and/or research support).
  • Formal Essay (of no more than 500 words): Some people argue that leaders are born, not made, while others defend the opposite view, namely that leaders are “made.” Write an essay in which you defend one view or the other. Use a specific example of a leader, either from history or from your own experience, to support your argument.
  • Finalists chosen for scholarship consideration will be required to complete an interview in February.
