Top 10 Secondary Schools in Ghana – 2018

With the increase in the number of students joining senior high schools in Ghana, competition between these schools has increased. As such, for anyone looking for a senior high school, it is a good idea to know which ones are the best in the country. Coming up is a listing of the top ten secondary schools in Ghana.

  1. Mfantsipim School

Mfantsipim School is located on Kwabotsa Hill, in Cape Coast, Ghana. This all-boys secondary school was established in 1876 by the Methodist Church. Formerly known as Wesleyan High School, this institution is one of the best secondary schools in Ghana. Students at this school grow academically, spiritually, morally and intellectually. Interestingly, many of the leading schools in Ghana were born out of Mfantsipim School. Notable alumni of this institution include Kofi Annan, Dr. K. A. Busia, and Alex Quaison-Sackey.

  1. Keta Senior High Technical School

This mixed public school is located in Dzekulope, in the Keta Municipal District of the Volta Region, Ghana. It is the biggest school in this region and was formerly known as Keta Secondary School. This institution was started back in 1953, with 22 students. In 2017, Ketasco received the App Silver Award at the MTN Developer Challenge. The school slogan, DZOLALI – ‘Now or Never’, is the driving force behind the success of its students.

  1. Holy Child School

Holy Child School (also known as Angel’s Hill) is a female second cycle (senior high) institution that was founded by the Society of the Holy Child Jesus (SHCJ). This school was started with the aim of providing education to the Catholics in the Cape Coast region of Ghana.

Holy Child provides holistic education for girls, enabling them to work towards achieving greater heights and eventually becoming women of substance.

  1. Prempeh College

Prempeh College was founded with the intention of filling the void in secondary education in the Ashanti region, and the Northern sector of Ghana. It began as a partnership between the Presbyterian and Methodist churches at the Gold Coast, the Kumasi Traditional Council and the Colonial Center government.

The students of Prempeh College receive a unique educational experience that enables them to excel academically and occupy positions of responsibility in the future.

  1. Accra Academy

This educational institution was founded on 20 July 1931 as a private school, and later became a government-assisted school in 1950. Accra Academy is a non-denominational day and boarding boys secondary school located in Bubuashie, close to Kaneshie in the Greater Accra Region.

Currently, this academy is known to be one of the few schools in Ghana that has 60% transition to tertiary institutions. Students of this academy are products of the dedication, discipline, devotion, and perseverance that form the foundation of this institution.

  1. St Peter’s Boys’ Senior High School

This institution is located in Nkwatia, in the eastern region of Ghana. It is named after St. Peter Claver and was founded in February 1957 primarily for the education of boys. This boarding school gives high quality academic and moral training to the boys, thus making them responsible for themselves and the society around them. Boys from diverse backgrounds get to benefit from the quality education that is based on Catholic ideals. St. Peter’s performs well in SSSCE and WASSCE, and always features prominently in the yearly National Science and Maths Quiz.

  1. Opoku Ware School

Opoku Ware School is commonly referred to as OWASS. It is an all-boys senior high school with a population of approximately 1300 students, and is one of the top secondary schools in Ghana. This institution was established in 1952, and was named after the Asante King “Opoku Ware 1”. Students and alumni are known as Akatakiye – the Asante word for conquering heroes.

  1. St Augustine’s College

St. Augustine’s College is an all-male public institution located in Cape Coast, Ghana. This college was founded in 1930, and was the first senior high school to be built on the Gold Coast. St. Augustine’s is the largest Catholic senior high school in Ghana and aims to offer high-quality education to its students, as well as equip them for leadership in every aspect of life. The tutors at this institution are committed to providing an excellent learning environment.

  1. Presbyterian Boys’ Senior School

This school, popularly referred to as PRESEC, is an all-boys school that was started by the Presbyterian Church of Ghana. It was founded in 1938 and moved to its present location – Legon – in 1965. Currently, this school has a population of 2500 and is a force to reckon with in academics and sports.

  1. Wesley Girls’ High School (Wey Gey Hey)

This senior high school for girls is located in Cape Coast, Ghana. It was founded back in 1836 by Mrs. Harriet Wrigley, with a population of 25 girls. Students of this school graduate with the values of Godliness, sacrifice, integrity, respect, excellence, and diligence firmly instilled. Wesley Girls’ aims to produce well-balanced, God-fearing, self-confident and disciplined individuals who will face the challenges of the modern world with confidence.
