Overview of the secondary school system in Malawi

In Malawi, students can attend either public secondary schools run by the government or private schools run by individuals or the private sector. The school fees in private schools are, however, much higher than those in public schools. 

Secondary School System

  • Secondary school education lasts four years, from Form 1 (Grades 9-10) to Form 4 (Grades 11 and 12). The Ministry of Education sets the secondary school curriculum. 
  • After two years, in Form 2, the students sit for the Malawi Junior Certificate Examination (JCE), then the Malawi School Certificate Examination (MCSE) after another two years, at Form 4. The second examination is a requirement for university entrance. 
  • Both of these examinations are set by the Malawi National Examinations Board (MANEB) and the Ministry of Education.
