There are two organizations that provide world rankings of the top universities in the world.
We, at Serve Africa, have complied both of these listings and from the combination of these rankings – listed our list of the top 20 universities in the world. You can view below for our combined listings
QS World University Rankings® (QS) measure university research quality, graduate employability, teaching commitment and international commitment. QS rankings use a combination of global surveys and audited data including citation counts from Scopus, the world’s largest database of academic publishing.
The Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings were developed in concert with our rankings data provider, Thomson Reuters, with expert input from more than 50 leading figures in the sector from 15 countries across every continent. We believe we have created the gold standard in international university performance comparisons.
The rankings of the top universities across the globe employ 13 separate performance indicators designed to capture the full range of university activities, from teaching to research to knowledge transfer.

Top 10 Universities in Africa
14 African universities make it into the QS Top 700 and THE Top 400 in 2011. Time and investment will be needed before more of Africa’s universities compete with the world’s best, though the continent does have one world-class university to serve as an example. The University of Cape Town is ranked 103 overall. You will also that Egypt’s universities dropped in the rankings – the result of the uprising this year – we trust his is a temporary setback as they work towards greater things in a free environment.
