Are you looking for a great university in Uganda where you can pursue your further studies? Take a look at this great list of top 10 universities in Uganda!

10. Makerere University Business School (MUBS)

  • MUBS was established in 1997 with the aim of centralizing the development and standardization of business and management studies in Uganda.
  • This institution, a leading provider of business and management studies, facilitates professional development, and also promotes leadership and entrepreneurship in the region.
  • MUBS also aims to enable the future of clients’ thoughts through the creation and provision of knowledge.

9. Busitema University

  • Busitema University, one of the top 10 universities in Uganda, is located in the Eastern region of Uganda. Its main campus is at Busitema, with other campuses at Nagongera, Namasagali, Mbale, Pallisa, Arapai and Kaliro.
  • This institution took in its first students on 3rd October, 2007.
  • Graduates of this institution leave with the core values of excellence, innovativeness, professionalism, equity, ethics and integrity, and relevance firmly entrenched.
  • Busitema University aims to be a center of professional and academic excellence in innovation, science and technology.

8. Uganda Christian University

  • Uganda Christian University is an authentic Christian higher education institution established by the Church of Uganda in 1972. Its establishment was in response to a need for high-quality university education with a Christian perspective.
  • The programs at this institution produce professionals who display integrity, logical thought, and independent judgement all based on Christian values.
  • UCU offers 70 diploma, bachelor’s, master’s and PhD programs.

7. Islamic University in Uganda

  • This institution was opened in 1988 by the OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation) under a bilateral agreement with the Government of Uganda.
  • The Islamic University has five campuses; the main one at Mbale, with the others at Kampala, Kabojja (female’s campus), Arua, and Kibuli Hill.
  • Currently, this university has a student population of just above 8600, and offers 72 study programs in its seven faculties.

6. Uganda Martyrs University

  • Uganda Martyrs University, another of the top 10 universities in Uganda, is well-known for its excellence and quality. It is a private faith-based institution, affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church.
  • UMU was started back in 1993 with only 84 students, and has since grown its student population to 5000.
  • This institution is located in Kampala, with other campuses at Masaka, Lira, Mbale and Kabale.

5. Kampala International University

  • Kampala International University has its main campus in Kampala, and has other campuses in the western region of Uganda, as well as in Dar es Salaam and Nairobi.
  • KIU was established in 2001, and currently has the largest teaching and referral hospital university in the country, as well as a 5000-seater library.
  • Scholars at this institution get the opportunity to explore new academic heights as they pursue their studies.

4. Gulu University

  • Gulu University aims to provide access to higher education and research while conducting quality professional training geared towards delivering appropriate services focusing on community transformation.
  • This institution is located in Laroo Division, Gulu Municipality, and has six faculties and two institutes.
  • Gulu University was opened in October 2002 at the District Farm Institute.

3. Kyambogo University

  • Kyambogo University was established in 2003, following a merger between the Institute of Teacher Education Kyambogo (ITEK), Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE) and Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK).
  • Kyambogo is a public university dedicated to delivering knowledge and skills for service providers.
  • This institution aims to promote knowledge in Science, Technology and Education (and other fields) with regard to progress, quality, equity and transformation of society.

2. Mbarara University of Science and Technology

  • Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) is a public university with a great reputation for producing community-oriented, internationally acclaimed graduates.
  • It was first opened in October 1989 in Mbarara Municipality in Uganda.
  • MUST aims to be known as a center for professional and academic excellence for studies in Science and Technology.

1. Makerere University

  • Makerere University, established in 1922, is one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Africa. It has three campuses, on Makerere Hill, Mulago Hill and at the Agricultural Institute at Kabanyolo.
  • This institution aims to provide innovative research, services, teaching and learning that is relevant and able to respond to current national and global needs.
  • Makerere offers 145 undergraduate and 139 postgraduate degree programs.
