Scholarship Overview

  • The Swedish Institute Study Scholarships target highly-qualified students and are awarded for studies in Sweden starting in an autumn semester. The scholarships are intended for full-time master’s level studies in Sweden and cover both living costs and tuition fees.

  • The list includes the majority of the master programmes presented at University Admissions.
  • The programmes are selected by the Swedish universities/university colleges.

What does the scholarship cover?

  • The scholarship covers both tuition fees (paid directly to the Swedish university/university college by the Swedish Institute) and living expenses to the amount of SEK 9,000 per month.
  • Scholarship holders receive a travel grant in connection with their scholarship. The travel grant is a one-time payment of SEK 15,000.
  • Scholarship holders are insured by the Swedish State Group Insurance and Personal Insurance against illness and accident during the scholarship period.

How many scholarships are given?

  • An estimated 300 scholarships will be available.
  • The scholarship is intended for full-time master’s level studies of one or two years, and is only awarded for programmes starting in the autumn semester.

Which countries are targeted?

The program is open to candidates from two different categories of countries. Please note that if your country is included under Category 1 – you can only apply within that category.

Category 1:

If your country is listed here you can only apply within this category.

Citizens of the following countries can apply for the scholarship within this category:

  • Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Cambodia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Mali, Mozambique, Myanmar (Burma), Rwanda, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • Approximately 210 scholarships will be available for category 1.

Category 2:

  • Brazil, China, Colombia, Egypt, India, Indonesia, South Africa and Syria.
  • Approximately 50 scholarships will be available for category 2

Category 3:

Candidates with citizenship from countries on the DAC list (SEE BELOW) of ODA recipients can apply to this program.

Priority will be given to candidates from
  • Algeria, Botswana, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Namibia, South Africa, Syria, Tunisia, Vietnam, the West Bank & Gaza, and Yemen.

DAC list – Least Developed Countries

  • Afghanistan Angola Bangladesh Benin Bhutan, Burkina Faso Burundi Cambodia, Central African Rep. Chad, Comoros, Congo, Dem. Rep .   • Albania, Algeria, *Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina Azerbaijan Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana Brazil Chile China Colombia, Cook Islands Costa Rica Cuba Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Gabon Grenada Iran Jamaica Jordan, Kazakhstan Lebanon Libya, Malaysia Maldives Mauritius Mexico, Montenegro, *Montserrat Namibia Nauru, Niue Palau Panama Peru Serbia, Seychelles, South Africa, *St. Helena, St. Kitts-Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and Grenadines, Suriname Thailand T Unisia, Turkey, Uruguay Venezuela, *Wallis and Futuna
  • Approximately 50 scholarships for category 3.
  • Up to 10 scholarships will be allocated to South African students and 15 scholarships to Syrian students.


Am I Eligible to Apply?

  • The programme offers a unique opportunity for future leaders to develop professionally and academically, to experience Swedish society and culture, and to build a long-lasting relationship with Sweden and with each other.
  • The goal is to enable the scholarship holders to play an active role in the positive development of the societies in which they live.
  • Ideal candidates are ambitious young professionals with academic qualifications, demonstrated leadership experience and a clear idea of how a study programme in Sweden would benefit their country.
  • Priority will be given to applicants choosing study programmes with an emphasis on gender equality, sustainable development, democracy, human rights or poverty reduction.


How to I Apply – Next Steps

STEP # 1 – Apply to Study at a Swedish University

  • Please note that the scholarship application is separate from the application to master’s programmes at Swedish universities.
  • Make sure to complete your application to the master’s programmes that you wish to apply to before the deadline January 16.
  • You apply by using the national online application service Universityadmissions.se.
  •  By midnight at the end of that day January 16, you must have searched for programmes and courses, selected them, and submitted the application at the account you created.
  • You’ll receive an email confirming your application was received.
  • By February 1st – you must pay your application fee to University Admissions – you also must upload various other documents supporting your application.


STEP # 2 – Apply for Scholarship

  • The scholarship application consists of two steps, – the second step is a detailed second application for successful candidates due from February 1-10
  • The application process and the selection criteria for the Swedish Institute Study Scholarships are separate from the application process to master’s programmes at University Admissions.

For the second step of the scholarship application you will be required to submit a:

  • Motivation letter,
  • a Europass CV,
  • a passport copy,
  • one letter of reference and one proof of work and leadership experience.
  • The documents must be in English.
  • If any mandatory document is not used or completed in English the application is deemed ineligible.


Closing Date:

  • Program Admission Application – January 16
  • Scholarship Application –  1-10 February
